Hi, I’m Deena Smith
Daughter | Sister | Dog Mom | Therapist | Educator | Advocate | Traveler | Yogi
I am a life-long learner and have worked as a clinical social worker for over ten years in mental health and substance use settings. I work with people from all different backgrounds and support people showing up as their authentic selves. Through my work, I have found it most helpful for the clients I’m working with to pull from a range of treatment modalities and be able to identify tools that best align with your goals and how you’d like to achieve them. Primarily, my perspective of practice is rooted in Rogerian and Strengths-based perspectives.
After receiving my Master’s in Social Work from Howard University, I have continued to expand my learning and specialization through continual trainings and certifications, including Motivational Interviewing, Seeking Safety, Integrated Mental Health/Addictions Treatment Training, Zero Suicide, and Comprehensive Crisis Management. I have continued engagement in the educational field and learning emerging techniques and evidence-based treatment modalities through my work as a professor in the Social Work graduate departments of Columbia University and Rutgers University.

My Approach to Therapy
I approach from a person-centered and strengths-based perspective. I believe that therapy is a joint journey where you are the expert in yourself and your life and my role as your therapist is to support you on this journey by providing information, skills, resources, and offering alternative perspectives. I like to introduce levity and humor into the sessions.
Individual Therapy
Meet with me for therapy on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Once a relationship has been established and you feel that you have made progress on your goals, there is an option to meet on a monthly basis.
Group Therapy
This is a service we will be working to develop and integrate in online group therapy sessions. Stay tuned!
